Second medical opinion
A second opinion is reasonable before any serious procedure, or in case of certainty – except in the event of emergencies. Even the need for information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of an operation can be a good reason to arrange for a second opinion.
- Do I really need this operation?
- How can I improve my health and my life quality?
- Which risks and drawbacks are there?
- Is there an alternative form of treatment?
- What happens if I have this operation later, or not at all?
A second medical opinion is the additional medical assessment of the initial diagnosis provided by a second doctor before a scheduled operation. Depending on the surgical field, in up to 50% of the cases, the doctor providing the second opinion will advise another therapy other than the operation. You, however, are always free to decide how you subsequently would like to proceed. Any possible treatment would not be carried out by the doctor providing the second opinion. This way, a neutral assessment is guaranteed.
