Breastfeeding can sometimes be difficult for mother and baby.
A breastfeeding consultation will help with any questions or problems.
Breastfeeding consultants have a lot of knowledge and experience.
They can show you a good position for breastfeeding, for example.
Your health insurance will pay for up to three consultations.
Whether it’s problems with the baby latching on, sore nipples or questions about the quantity of milk, your midwife will often be able to help you with general questions about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding consultants are the ideal port of call for specific or complex questions. They can help you to overcome challenges and create a positive relationship between you and your newborn baby in terms of breastfeeding. If breastfeeding functions smoothly, this boosts your confidence and enhances the bond with your child. Sometimes it takes patience and perseverance, but having the right support will make it easier.

What does a breastfeeding counsellor do?

Breastfeeding counsellors or often also called breastfeeding consultants  are medical experts with special qualifications in the areas of breastfeeding and lactation, which is the process of producing breast milk. With their expertise and empathetic approach, they work closely with the mother and provide individual support on all matters related to breastfeeding.

A breastfeeding counsellor provides support with and advice on:

  • Questions about breastfeeding during pregnancy or negative breastfeeding experiences
  • Questions about supplementing with formula milk
  • Breastfeeding positions, nutrition for the mother during breastfeeding, expressing and weaning
  • Increasing or regulating the quantity of breast milk produced
  • Pain or inflammation in the breast (mastitis)
  • Specific challenges such as breastfeeding premature babies or twins
  • Specific medical situations (e.g. cleft lip and palate)
  • Combining breastfeeding and work

Many breastfeeding counsellors offer home visits and run meetings of breastfeeding groups. Breastfeeding consultations may also be provided at the hospital’s breastfeeding clinic.
